A sung narrative in one act
A sharp, funny, and sometimes harrowing musical narrative of three bi-racial siblings growing up in 1960's America.
The eldest: an extraordinary beauty and talent.
The youngest: autistic and schizophrenic.
The middle child sings their stories.
From 1960's America to Australia in the 21st century, Songwoman hides nothing of the ugliness of racism and its consequences. yet it is ultimately a story of humour, love and the redemptive power of inclusiveness. The songs are an eclectic mix of style and genre, reinforcing this theme.
Songwoman is not an opera. It is not musical theatre. These are not show tuends, nor is it cabaret. Songwoman is something else.
Words and music by Gerianne Rudd.
